The personal computer has its history in a various machine in going back centuries.

One of these was the Abacus.

There were Mesopotamian, Egyptian, Persian, Greek, Roman, Chines, Korean, Indian and Russian version of the Abacus.

They are hardly a computer but of course, people were able to do calculations upon them.

When we look at important steps in computing Charles Babbage’s can mechanical difference machine was one of these.

Back in the 18th century, Charles Babbage was working on a mechanical computer.

His invention, the mechanical difference machine was never built during his lifetime but recently one was put together by Babbage enthusiasts.

By winding various handles this moved cogs and was able to work out calculations.

Punched Card Machine – By Herman Hollerith

Punched Card Machine is the first Data Processing Machine which was developed by Herman Hollerith in 1890 US Census.

Actually, the system used a hand punch to record data. The machine contained a spring-loaded pin for each potential hole in the card. When a card was placed in the reader and the handle pushed down, the pin that passed through the holes closed electrical circuits causing counters to be added to and a lid in a sorting box would open.

In 1890 Census, Hollerith machine saved Govt. $5,000,000 by completing 10 Year work just in 3 Years of counting 62 Million Cards.

In 1911. This company was merged into the company we knew as IBM.

The Electronic Numerical Integrator Calculator (ENIAC) the computer was invented at the University of Pennsylvania USA and made between 1943-1946. It occupied 1800 square feet, used 18000 vacuum tubes and weighed about 50 tons.

 

IBM Home Computer

The IBM Home Computer was developed in 1981.

IBM wanted other computer makers to make programs for its Home Computer. So they gave out all the details and made them available to anyone who wanted them copyright free.

This was a poor move. Other makers wrote a program for the IBM machine and then they copied the machine itself and manufactured it themselves. All done legally.

This should be seen as a great “Business Blunder”

Apple computer was developed in 1984.

Apple computers have been seen as the computer for designers.

IBM Computers have been seen as the computer for businessmen.

The Apple mouse only has one button on it.

Bill gates make a copyrighted business plan and he takes copyright fee from all PC makers who want to install their DOS program on their computer.

Now, Bill gates become rich with men.
